Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in one of the locker rooms at my high school.

Time

This was taken right after school got out so around 3 pm. It was a little hard because athletes were coming in to get ready for practice.

Lighting

I wanted the image to have a defeated feeling to it. Either that it was half time and his team was losing or that the game was over and his team lost. I wanted this photo to tell a story.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 5D mark iii using a 24-7mm lens. I ended up not using a tripod due to little space available in the locker room, I had three profoto lights set up two coming from behind and one with a softbox coming from the front. I also used a smoke machine to block out some of the background.

Inspiration

I want to be a sports photographer and I'm usually taking action photos. So I wanted to try something different and I've seen other football photos with a player sitting like this but was never able to quite get a story feeling from it. And that's what I wanted to accomplish.

Editing

I changed the lighting a bit to give it a cool feeling and added texture on to the lockers making them look old and like the paint is peeling off of them.

In my camera bag

I always have my canon 50mm 1.8 lens, along with my 70-200mm 2.8. You never know if your gonna find something to take a picture of where you can be close up or where you have to have distance between you and the subject.

Feedback

Make sure you have a story in mind that you want the picture to portray it makes everything easier, try many different poses and do as much as you can in camera so you don't have to do so much post work. Play around with lighting until it feels right to you. Also make sure your photo stands out from everyone else's.
