Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at La Lung La (Pass) in Tibet while travelling from Nyalam to Lake Mansarovar.

Time

We started early in the morning from Nyalam and were admiring the nature outside when our driver stopped the vehicle at this very spot for about 15 minutes. It was 9 minutes past 8.00 in the morning when I finally got the shot I wanted.

Lighting

An early morning shot would have been ideal, but, when you are touring with a group of people, it's not always possible. Nevertheless, the light was good and the scene was well lit.

Equipment

This was shot handheld with Nikon D5100 DSLR Camera and Tamron 10-24 mm f/3.5-4.5 lens.

Inspiration

When I got down from our vehicle, I could see vast barren land, devoid of any vegetation, bounded by snow clad mountain ranges. And, there was an arch created across the road with Prayer Flags of Tibet. These flags were everywhere and after shooting at nearby locations, this particular frame caught my attention. I placed the colourful Prayer Flags contrasting against the backdrop of the barren landscape and the snow clad mountains and made this photograph.

Editing

As in case of any digital camera file, I,too, did some exposure and colour corrections and somewhat sharpened the image to arrive at the final result.

In my camera bag

Whenever I set out on a tour or an expedition, I, first and foremost, pack my Tamron 10-24 mm f/3.5-4.5 wide angle and Nikon 35 mm f/1.8 lenses for capturing landscapes. Next comes the Camera body Nikon D7100 with 18-105 mm AF Nikkor lens and a 55-300 mm AF Nikkor lenses. Then there is the heavyweight sigma 150-500 mm f/5.0-6.3 for those wildlife shots and for shooting distant landscapes. Apart from these,I carry a manfrotto sturdy tripod, a monopod, an extra battery and rain/dust cover for camera.

Feedback

Always keep an eye for something different, for you may not be visiting some places like Lake Mansarovar very often. The weather in such regions changes very frequently creating ample shooting opportunities for a photographer. Patience and perseverance are the keys to capture great photographs. And, of course, avoid travelling in large groups, as far as possible, so that you can have control over your own shooting time.
