Behind The Lens

Location

This is Lake Manapouri on the Kepler Track in the South Island of New Zealand.

Time

This was taken at 4:13am.

Lighting

This is a 30 second exposure and I have done a bit of light painting of the foreground with my head torch. Although not visible to the eye there is an airglow in the sky which is a precursor to an aurora.

Equipment

Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X at 16mm, no tripod as it was too heavy to carry so I just rested the camera on a log which I had planned the night before.

Inspiration

I couldn't resist getting a photo of the night sky, well away from any light pollution. Being so far from home and on a 4 day hike I knew I probably wouldn't get another opportunity like this. I took several photos but in this one you can see an iridium flare which at the time I didn't know anything about. The worst pat was getting bitten by lots of sandflies.

Editing

I have edited in lightroom to do some levels, noise reduction, colour balance, sharpening etc.

In my camera bag

Canon EOS 5D Mark III Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X Canon EF 24–105mm f/4L Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L Lee Big Stopper

Feedback

If possible plan your setup before it gets dark and get the camera settings correct then too. Take several shots and pick the best one.
