Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Biggin Hill Airport in Kent, England. The Spitfire featured belongs to Biggin Hill Heritage Hanger.

Time

The photo was taken at sunset on a September evening, so probably around 9.00pm

Lighting

Sunset, at the end of the “golden hour”. No artificial light.

Equipment

Nikon D750 and Nikon f2.8 70-200mm

Inspiration

I was there to watch the original Battle of Britain movie and had just watched this Spitfire and a Hurricane perform a very intimate air display.

Editing

Used Lightroom for some fairly simple processing. Beyond minor adjustments to the exposure, contrast, shadows and sharpening little else was done.

In my camera bag

In my bag I usually have 2 bodies, Nikon D750 and D500, Tamron f2.8 24-70mm, Nikon f2.8 70-200mm and SB910 flash.

Feedback

Because the sun is just about to set there is very little time to take the shot, so in this situation there is little time to experiment so i had to envisage what I wanted and make my best guess for settings. Bracketing may have been a better option but i was happy with the result. Just need to be aware not to underexposed too much because of the sun as this can lead to silhouette which was not the intended outcome.
