Location
The portrait was taken in my hometown in Illinois, at an old settlers camp. You can even take tours inside the cabin!Time
It was a hot summer day, and the sun's position was at high noon. I felt so bad for my stepfather, because he was wearing layers of heavy clothing, including leather. I had taken previous shots before I captured this one, so the sweat was really rolling down his face. Total trooper!Lighting
The lighting is all natural, there is no reflector or flash used in this specific image. I utilized the hat as a way to prevent harsh lighting on the face, and to make the viewer a little curious about the identity of the man behind the hat. The light was straight above as you can see how it falls on his hat and jacket.Equipment
I used a canon 7d camera with a 50mm lensInspiration
My stepfather actually suggested the idea, and I thought it was a great one. So we kind of collaborated on this image together!Editing
Yes I used lightroom for color tonality, and photoshop to sharpen or remove any distracting elements. In my camera bag
I usually have my camera canon 7d, my 50mm, 85mm, 70-200mm, and 35mm. I also carry my light meter along with my reflector and one flash with triggers.Feedback
Try not to over complicate the things. We get so caught up in gear, and techniques. Instead utilize what you have and focus more on the story and how impact is going to make the viewers feel.
