Location
I took this photo at one of my late wife and my favorite camping spots. It was at Illinois Beach State Park on Lake Michigan. We loved to sit on the beach and watch the ships pass by. We would make up stories about the people and their destination. We decided that this was a pirate ship on it's way to plunder Milwaukee.Time
This was taken during the late afternoon. We enjoyed the cool afternoon breezes on the beach.Lighting
With the beautiful natural lighting that we had, something was missing. I though that the perfect addition would be the moon. Unfortunately, the moon was in a different part of the sky. So I had to move the moon to where I wanted it.Equipment
When I took this picture, I was still using my old Kodak digital camera. I had no tripod with me at the time, so I took it handheld. Since then, my equipment has gotten a lot better, but I still forget my tripod a lot. So most of my pictures are still handheld.Inspiration
I guess I have an eclectic style to my photography. I get my inspiration almost anywhere. One moment I will be photographing graceful flamingos, and then I am focusing in on a mosquito. My personal philosophy is to photograph whatever catches your eye. I have found beautiful photos in the most unexpected places.Editing
I wasn't satisfied with the photo of the sailboat on it's own, I felt that the moon would make an excellent focal point. I took an image of the moon and superimposed it above the sailboat. Then I gradually increased the size of the moon to get the effect I wanted. In my camera bag
I always carry my Nikon D3200 camera. The lenses I carry vary depending on my plan for the day. I usually have a Nikon 18-55mm lens with me, my Nikon 55-300mm VR lens, and a Tamron 70-300mm lens with a built in macro feature. I also carry additional batteries, assorted filters, and when I remember it, my tripod.Feedback
Photography has been my hobby for about 40 years and I am still learning with every shot. My advice to anyone who wants to get better, is take lots of pictures. With the advent of the digital camera, you have unlimited possibilities. In the old days when I started, all we had was film. Every shot had to be planned and re-planned, then executed perfectly the first time. We didn't get to see or results until after the film was processed. Embrace the flexibility that you have now. And above all, ENJOY!
