What a fantastic capture! Incredible. Were you on a rock, a canoe, a raft, or you have an excellent zoom, or maybe in the river itself? Beautiful colors and brightness. Thanks for sharing!:)

Thanks! Actually, I was standing in the river. It's not that deep and in most places it's only 1-2 feet deep; however, it does get deep enough where you have to start swimming, a little farther down the canyon. The entire Narrows hike consists of treading through the Virgin River, up the canyon for about 4-5 miles. It's one of the most beautiful and amazing hikes I've ever been on. And thanks for commenting, I really appreciate the feedback!

Great shot. I try and hike the Narrows every time I go to Zion. Have yet to make it the whole 12 miles in. The lighting is perfect.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Zion National Park in August 2015.

Time

Taken at around 11:00 AM Mountain time.

Lighting

The sunlight hitting the canyon walls at a bend in the river allowed me to make it look as though there was a sunshine waterfall in the background. I changed nearly nothing from the original photograph. The canyon walls, both dark and light, and the water are all the exact same color as it was in real life.

Equipment

I believe at the time I was using a Canon T5 Rebel, a tripod, no flash, 35mm lens, and that's about it. Pretty barebones.

Inspiration

I love photography in general, and will plan my vacations around iconic photography locations. Zion National Park was my first attempt at such a vacation. The inspiration came from the landscape and a few photographs that I'd seen on my computer's screensaver. I just knew I had to get back into photography around that time and this was the first trip.

Editing

I sharpened the photograph a bit but unlike a majority of my photographs, I made nearly no changes to this one.

In my camera bag

Now I have a Sony A7RII, three tripods, five separate lens kits, 6 different lenses - from fisheye to telephoto. Waterproof casing attachments and bags. And about 10 batteries and SD cards just in case.

Feedback

Walk the narrows, enjoy the time there. Photographs will present themselves to you as there really isn't that much skill that is required to take an amazing photo there. Just watch out for the sun at mid-day and how it'll affect your lighting of the walls.
