This was an early morning photo of the wheat field on Cemetery Ridge at Gettysburg, PA This was one of my favorite shots of the morning. The way I was able capture the fog as it was hovering over the wooden fence added a sense of reverence to the morning.

Behind The Lens

Location

Gettysburg National Park. This location marks the monument to the Fifth Massachusetts Battery. This location is south of Town of Gettysburg on Wheatfield Road. The battery was commanded at the Battle of Gettysburg by Captain Charles A. Philips. It brought 104 men to the field serving six 3 inch Ordnance Rifles. The monument was dedicated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1885.

Time

This photograph was taken at approximately 6:30 in the morning. My wife and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary and chose to return to where we had our honeymoon many years ago. We decided to get up early in the morning and take a ride through the park without the noise and distraction of all the visitors. It turned out to be a very peaceful morning and the early fog presented some interesting pictures.

Lighting

On this morning, I was attempting to capture the sun rise and the effect it had on the morning radiant fog.

Equipment

My current camera is a Nikon D7200. I believe this morning I was using my 18-105mm f3.5 lens.

Inspiration

The opportunity to have the entire park to ourselves on such a beautiful morning was hard to pass up. Of the hundreds of pictures my wife and I took during our anniversary, this was by far our favorite. It captured the tranquility of the morning, yet was a vivid reminder of the terrible hardship that men from the North and South endured for three days.

Editing

In this photograph, I adjusted the exposure a little bit to lighten the front of the monument. No other post editing was done.

In my camera bag

My old camera was a D80. Before this trip, I managed to purchase a new D7200 (with my wife's permission). As I was experimenting with all the new "bells and whistles" on this camera, this was a weekend for some drastic learning. I normally pack with me a travel tripod, and for lenses I like to have on hand my 18-105mm, for a general purpose lens; my 50mm lens, just because it still fits in my bag, and my 70-300mm as my zoom lens. I just recently purchased an 18-35mm lens and an older 105 AI-S to expand into some night and macro photography.

Feedback

Depending on what you like to photograph, the night life of the Town of Gettysburg or the battlefield itself, this area has it all. If you don't mind people and events, Gettysburg has reenactments scheduled throughout the year. Gettysburg also hosts a WW2 weekend at the former Eisenhower Farm. So, not to sound like a travel agent, there are many experiences in the area that should not be missed.
