Behind The Lens

Location

The location was a hotel suite where a photography club was hosting an event.

Time

The indoor photo was taken in early evening using.

Lighting

I used one of my 250 Watt strobes softened with a white umbrella to prevent harsh shadows. After adding the virtual wall paper and wall sconce, I added a vignette to emphasise the model as subject.

Equipment

Canon T3i, Canon 18 - 135 zoom lens, Neewer 250 watt strobe with LS Pro stand and white umbrella. Manual settings are generally 1/60, f8, and 100 ISO, adjusting the brightness for best skin tone on the model.

Inspiration

I did not know it at the time, but this photo appears in my coffee table book titled "ArtiztikFoto's Vintage Showgirls & Burlesque" It is a compilation of about 3 years of favorite model photos, including staged vintage set-ups. modified model shots with virtual vintage props added, and also images taken during live stage performances by Burlesque revivalists.

Editing

To make the location more vintage, the wallpaper was added in Photoshop from my personal collection of backgrounds. It was from the office of a historical Catholic church. I also added the vintage light fixture. I shoot interesting objects and backgrounds wherever I find them, for potential future use. That way a composite like this is all my own work.

In my camera bag

I have a Canon T5i and a T3i to avoid switching lenses, enough blank memory cards, batteries, cleaning kit, and an adjustable Speedlight. For this event I brought a pair of 250 Watt strobes, with stands, white umbrellas, hotshoe trigger and slaves. Best to have some back-up equipment when on location with a paid model.

Feedback

The experienced model has classic and timeless beauty, a girl next door look, and wore a vintage costume and hair style. She knew in advance this would be a non-nude glamour session, and brought her own wardrobe, did her own nails, hair and make-up. Almost a year had passed when delighted to learn her images would be appearing in my showgirl book.I always furnish my edited favorites for personal portfolio samples, and they will refer their friends to work with me. I always get signed release and photo ID before the session begins. When doing vintage work I prefer to find models without extensive piercings and tattoos, but have to let it go if they are otherwise a good choice for casting. In some cases I do retouch to remove poorly done ink that would be a distraction, but it is a lot of extra work and editing time.
