Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken downtown in Asheville, North Carolina. Asheville is a hub of sorts for vagabonds and traveler and a perfect place to meet people for my project, "The Nikon Kidd"

Time

I took this photo during the last bit of light that day. The lighting is all natural. The sun had already gone down, but the afterglow gave me just enough light to capture this image.

Lighting

The lighting was perfect and almost no post-processing was necessary - It came out of the camera looking like this.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D3300 and 35mm f/1.8 lens

Inspiration

I took this photo because I wanted to show people another side of life. Too often people consider the homeless to be "sub-human". They won't look them in the eye, hold a conversation, and avoid them in the streets. I find that they're often full of life once you get to know them. I slept outside for nearly a year during the course of my project.

Editing

The image came out of the camera looking pretty much like this. My natural light was perfect. I added a mild vignetting and upped the vibrance a bit for impact. That's it.

In my camera bag

When I took this photo I was hitchhiking. I carried only the D3300 and my 35mm f/1.8 lens in my bag.

Feedback

You can't stay home and expect to get great shots that people want to see. Go to events, go to towns, travel. Show people things they can't see easily on their own.
