Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken as part of a nude series in my college photo studio.

Time

I remember weeks and weeks of meticulous planning that went into planning this photo shoot. This image was taken during late morning in the studio.

Lighting

I had a very specific look that I was wanting to achieve with this series. I wanted a very high-key and high-contrast image set. To successfully achieve this look, I attached a single strobe to a boom overhead with a beauty dish, a second strobe just for the backdrop, and a reflector at the corner to illuminate my model's face.

Equipment

This series was shot with a Canon 5D Mark III, 35mm 1.8 lens, and Profoto D1 strobe kit along with a silver beauty dish and a 52-inch silver reflector. I used a tall backdrop stand with white seamless paper.

Inspiration

I have a background in anatomy and biology and I have a fascination with the human body and how it works. My inspiration for this series was the beauty of the human body and musculature. I wanted to let my models show off their hard work and let their bodies do the talking.

Editing

I usually don't do much post-processing other than color correction, but I wanted to step out of my comfort zone. I used Camera RAW, Photoshop, and my medium Wacom tablet to achieve this super high-contrast look. I boosted the contrast globally and then created individual layers and masks to dodge and burn exactly where I wanted. I used a very low opacity brush to have as much control as possible. Each image took a minimum of an hour from start to finish in post. I wanted these images to look hand-painted - similar to statues.

In my camera bag

Currently in my bag I have my Nikon D700 (my workhorse), Nikon D7000 (my crop workhorse), Sigma 17-55mm 2.8, Nikon 24-85mm, Tamron 70-200 2.8, Nikon 50mm 1.8, Sigma ART 20mm 1.4, and my Nikon SB-700. Along with my camera equipment I always carry Tenergy batteries, extra Lexar CF and SD cards, Gary Fong diffuser, safety pins, bobby pins, clamps, and multiple varieties of tape. I like to be prepared for anything that may come my way while out on a shoot!

Feedback

For anyone interested in fitness or artistic nudes, my biggest piece of advice is to be prepared! I thought out every single detail for this shoot for 7-8 weeks before even stepping into the studio. Also, as much as we all love our models, make sure to have backups. Models are human too and they may get sick, get called away for an emergency, etc. Whatever could go wrong, make sure to have a plan of action! And of course: HAVE FUN! From the moment I step into the studio, I crank up some fun music. It makes me more comfortable getting my equipment set up, and it gets your models comfortable with you - and a comfortable model is a happy model!
