Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo of Sherman Falls in Ancaster Ontario Canada which is located on the Niagara Escarpment which is mainly made up of limestone. The former town of Ancaster was officially founded in 1793 and is one of the oldest European communities established in present-day Ontario. In 2001 the Town of Ancaster amalgamated with the City of Hamilton and is now referred to as a community of Hamilton and is the most westerly portion of the golden horseshoe conurbation of Southern Ontario. Sherman Falls is located on the old Ancaster-Dundas road at what is referred to as "Devils Elbow" hairpin turn in the road. Sherman Falls is a terraced ribbon waterfall that is 56 feet high and 27 feet wide and sits in a gorge 656 feet from the road with walking paths on both sides with trees growing out of the limestone right up to the top of the gorge.

Time

The day I took this photo was a week day simply because I knew that there would be less people out hiking in the area. I had planed my day so that I would be at the waterfall later in the afternoon when there would be less harsh sunlight shining on the waterfall. By the time I got to the waterfall and walked up the path it was around three o'clock in the afternoon.

Lighting

The lighting for this photo was natural light that was being filtered by all the trees that are growing on either side of the limestone gorge were the waterfall is. The trees were working as a perfect filter allowing just enough light to filter through so that it was not to dark and also allowing some sunlight though to form highlights to reflect on the waterfall on a slight angle. This photo is one of my favorite pics because it is completely unedited and was taken on July 16 2015 at 3.41 pm.

Equipment

The camera I used to take the photo is a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H400 And a tripod I bought about seven years ago that I have used so much that the brand name has wore off.

Inspiration

My family is from Ancaster and I lived there for several years and knew about the waterfalls in the area. When I got my Sony Cyber-shot camera I knew I had to go and try taking some photos of the waterfalls. It was like going home were I grew up and reliving memories of years gone by seeing the places you use to go and remember the things you did when you were younger. The best part is that now I have pics of the places were I use to go to and I can now hang my memories on the wall and see them everyday.

Editing

The photo of Sherman falls is unedited.

In my camera bag

My camera bag is a Vanguard adaptor 41 backpack that can be converted into a sling bag with a built in rain cover and a three point tripod holder. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H400 camera. Three backup battery packs for recharging camera. lens cleaning brush. Mini tripod with bendable legs for cell phone camera. Samsung galaxy S3 cell phone. Standard size tripod. Charging cord for camera. small first aid kit.

Feedback

The best thing to do is to plan ahead when the best day will be to take the photo and at what time of the day will provide you with the right amount of light. Wear the right kind of shoes or boots depending on the location. Having a backpack camera bag so your hands are free so you can keep your balance in rough or rock terrain and a water bottle with a clip on it so you can clip it to your backpack camera bag or a belt loop. Cell phone and a zip lock bag in case you phone is not water proof and a small first aid kit.
