Behind The Lens

Location

In a public house in my home town of High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, UK

Time

It was around mid-morning on a Saturday or Sunday. I was taking a break before heading out to take some photographs around the town.

Lighting

The lighting is completely natural and provided by a large window 45 degrees to the right from the gent in picture.

Equipment

Canon EOS 50D, Canon EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 III, I'd forgotten to pack my small tripod so I balanced the camera on top of a pint glass.

Inspiration

I was struck by how the light was hitting the man at first. I decided it might make a good picture and attempted to frame it as best as Icould.

Editing

I use Adobe Lightroom for organising and making basic edits. My skills are not that strong, so all that has been done to this image is a conversion to monochrome and some adjustments to the highlights and shadows.

In my camera bag

These days I only carry a 50D camera body, a EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens, a Joby gorillapod, a speedlight and spare batteries.

Feedback

Look out for subjects that are in good or interesting light. This image came about by first noticing the light and the potential for an image second. The lighting in this case also made me think it would make a far stronger monochrome image than in colour, before I'd even pressed the shutter.
