The depth effect in this photo is breathtaking. I literally gasped when I first saw it. I love how you didn't lose dimension when you blurred the background.

Behind The Lens

Location
The photo was taken close to the Trift Bridge in the Grimselwelt region in the Swiss Alps. It is an excellent and inspiring location with rapidly changing weather conditions. In summer you can reach Switzerland's longest suspension bridge in one and a half an hour which also gives you some goosebumps.
Time
I captured the image during a weekend trip at noon in early September in a partially cloudy weather situation. We did not plan and prepare too much for the picture, I dropped my portrait lens and a nice dress for my girlfriend in the backpack before the trip - just in case. Then we saw this breath-taking cliff rising above the valley and the camera was no more in the bag!
Lighting
Taking a photo around noon is challenging since there is a huge amount of light. I waited until the sky was a bit filtered by clouds which resulted in better shadows and highlights without overexposing the image.
Equipment
I have used my favorite portrait gear, the fabulous Nikon D810 with a Nikkor 85mm f1.4 lens.
Inspiration
We love to create mini-sessions with my girlfriend. She is a fashion addict and a nature lover. As we live in Switzerland we are blessed with pictoresque landscapes filled with rocks, woods, lakes, rivers, mountains. Such a small country rich in flora and fauna, unbelieveable! Each day which I can spend in the nature with my camera is part of an endless journey and source of inspiration. The weather is changing fast here which creates interesting light conditions and each season frames a completely different story.
Editing
The biggest challenge was to separate the model from the background. On the original picture she wears a yellow dress and the tone of the picture was less rich which almost made a homogene appearance leaving her unnoticed. On the other hand, the bokeh balances all these. To separate the color of the dress from the green of the pinetrees I used selective color. Then I helped a bit on the skin color and increased the brightness of the picture. Eventually I applied some sharpening to achieve the final image.
In my camera bag
It always depends on the purpose of my photography. If I'm on a relaxing trip with my family I try to reduce the equipment to a single lens, which can be a 35mm f1.8 lens or the 24-70mm. In case I walk evening in city I try to catch the atmosphere with some crazy bokeh in the background using the amazing Defocus Control 135mm f2 lens. On weddings I have 2 bodies (one FX and one DX as a spare), 2 Nissin flashes, some fix aperture lenses (50mm, 85mm) and the 24-70mm f2.8 lens. Though, I really try to be out of the gear war and simply focus on the image itself. I think what really matters are ideas, feelings, emotions, colours, forms, the message, the content.
Feedback
I think the most important is to step out into the nature with your camera and shoot, experiment, feel the fresh air. No matter where, even though Switzerland is an awesome country, nature is everywhere and you can find the beautiness in every creature, landscape. Use your imagination, think, capture, exercise, find models, experiment with the light, shadows, colors, forms. I also enjoy looking at other people's work - ViewBug is such a good place for that! ;-)
