Location
This image was taken along the lakeshore of Atlin Lake in northern British Columbia, Canada. The sun just had vanished behind the far mountainrange and cast a stunning red light across the clouds. Water has covered the rocks along the shoreline with thick ice—the lake isn't frozen just yet. The long exposure and a slight bit of mist in the far dips the image in a magic mood.Time
Days are short in the far north and sunsets can last quite some time. This image was taken at about 3:30 in the afternoon in mid-December, when the night is slowly steeling away the daylight. I took a series of images with the seeting sun at a location close by and wanted to leave after it went down completely. While packing up, I came across this rock-formation and loved how the cloud formed a similar shapes as the rocks. I had stop to shoot it.Lighting
The lighting is pretty straight forward. All natural light—but a long exposure, supported by a soft ND-grad filter.Equipment
I used the Canon 7D l at that time along with the Tokina 11-16mm—f/2.8 ultra-wide angle lens at 11mm. Camoren tripod with a Sirui ballhead. Lee soft ND-grad filterInspiration
I love the long sunsets during the darkest days of winter and often head out to capture it's beauty. The light is never the same but always magical. Ice, snow and fog provide the most wonderful setting in the cold, short days in the far north. A neverending inspiration in the land of ice and snow.Editing
Not much postprocessing was needed for this image. The soft ND-grad filter did a great job in balancing the sky. I did some curve- and level adjustments in Photoshop. That's it :)In my camera bag
For my landscape photography I always carry a trusted tripod along—along with the Canon 7D l or Canon 5D Mark lll it is the most important tool for me. Not to forget my go-to lenses the Tokina 11-16mm for the ultra-wide angle shots and nightphotography. Also the Canon L 17-40mm, f/4 is a lens I usually carry along. My newest member of the family is the Canon L 24-70mm, f/2.8, USM. I love it's sharpness and overall performance. Never to missed on my nature-strolls is a collection of filters. I love LEE-filters and treated myself to a whole set of soft and hard ND-grad filters, as well as the Big Stopper which is my favourite tool for long-exposure photography. Plus several polarizer-filters for my different lenses—a staple in my bag.Feedback
GO OUT AND PLAY. Take along a spirit for adventure, patience and hot coffee. Experiment in different light situations and don't be afraid to share your work. Feedback is the biggest motivation to get better and evolve. It's not the gear that makes a good photographer—it's your vision! You can take an award-winning shot in your own backyard—train your vision to see that special thing around you and you're on the road to be a successful photog.
