Behind The Lens
Location
Columbia, Missouri, USA. Taken from a parking lot less than a block from my home, a place I frequently watch storms.Time
It was obviously dark out, but still fairly early in the evening.Lighting
If at night, set your light based on small flashes in the clouds, not the landscape.Equipment
Nikon body and lens. I think this was a 300 zoom lens, cropped later. I used a tripod, adding a remote trigger for part of the evening.Inspiration
I'm always in awe of storms. If near my house, I'm out there with a camera.Editing
Yes, in Photoshop. The sky didn't need more than contrast, but there were distracting twigs and bracken at the bottom I needed to clean up.In my camera bag
Nikon camera, prime/macro lens, zoom lensFeedback
Take a tripod. Take a LOT of shots. You can't time this. You can't even guess at timing, and location is hard to plan. Shoot wide. You can always crop later, but you don't want to cut off the streak. The hardest part is balancing for light. The flash is so bright, it is easy to go too bright and lose it.
