My son at 14 months. Table lamp and his little chair, along with an upside down fabric container. Lighting was a single flash in a 22" gridded beauty dish overhead. Taken with a Canon 5D Mark II, and 50mm f-1.2L lens.
Setup for this was very simple, and in a very small space. You can check out a shot of the setup on my blog http:--pllphotography.com-?p=29

this is great! I wonder if 65 years from now he will be sleeping on his easy chair?

Location
This photo was taken in my living room, with only a small section of wall. The lamp was a table lamp, so it was just the right size to look like a floor lamp for my son. His foot rest was actually a canvas box that was turned upside down.Time
It was in the evening when this photo was made. My son had already fallen asleep. My wife and I carefully placed him in his chair and posed him. We added props like the book, foot rest, and lamp.Lighting
I set my white balance to cloudy to give it a nice peaceful, warm feel. Lighting was a gridded 22" beauty dish above with a 580 EX II @ 1/2 power, triggered with Phottix Odins in manual mode.Equipment
taken with a Canon 5D II and 50mm f/1.2L lens. Canon 580 EX II ISO 100 1/200 shutter speed f/4.5 Gridded Beauty Dish Boom standInspiration
My son always looks peaceful when he sleeps. I can only imagine the things he dreams about, especially after reading him fairy tales to put him fast asleep. I wanted a natural looking shot to capture that serenity.Editing
Other than a bit of sharpening, and a little vignette to set the "mood", this photo is pretty much straight out of camera. the gridded beauty dish did a great job of putting the light where I needed it.In my camera bag
It doesn't matter what camera brand you are loyal to, as long as you have the drive and motivation to get the shot you are after. When I took this photo, I owned a Canon 5D Mark II, and my favorite lens at the time was the 50mm f/1.2 L prime. I've since switched to the Fuji system. Nowadays, in my bag you'll find the Fuji XT-1. I've never been much of a zoom lens user. I love primes. My current lenses of choice are the Fuji XF 23mm, 35mm, and 56mm lenses (35mm, 50mm, and 85mm respectively). I also carry a Cheetah v850 speedlite in my everyday bag with the accompanying wireless trigger system. All of this goes in a leather camera bag I carry around with me at all times.Feedback
If your shot doesn't turn out like you would like, try again. Don't give up. I haven't had any formal training, just self taught by trial and error, as well as using the internet as a resource. There are tons of tutorials and instructional videos. Practice. Read. Watch. Learn. Don't be afraid of criticism, it helps you develop and improve. Don't overcomplicate things. Start out simple.
