Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Church of Our in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. I live about half-an-hour or so away fro Guelph and had never visited this church before.

Time

Oddly, this photo was taken at one of the worst times of day for shooting: it was taken around 1:00 in the afternoon. The morning was mostly overcast, but by mid-day the sun was starting to break through in some places so I was able to get some nice light and some cloud definition

Lighting

The light broke through the clouds at just the right time and just the right location to give the clouds some definition. With the help of a wide-angled lens, it gives the appearance that the clouds are all extending outwards from a single spot behind the church.

Equipment

This image was shot with a Nikon D600 with a 14-24 f/2.8 lens. The camera was mounted on a tripod. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I'm always on the lookout for interesting or unusual-looking architecture. What struck me about the church is that this part of it looks like a medieval castle - a look that wouldn't be out of place for somewhere in Europe, but very rare for this part of the world. As well, this is actually the back of the church - the front looks very different. The positioning of the clouds had me thinking that a straight on view would work best to play up the symmetry

Editing

I do most of my work in Lightroom. For this image I started off processing the RAW image in Lightroom for basic exposure control, sharpening and to darken the edges. I converted to black & white in Nik Silver Efex Pro 2. I figured that black and white would work well with the textures in the image.

In my camera bag

My absolute favourite lens is the Nikon 14-24 f/2.8. It's incredibly sharp and it's still pretty good at not giving too much distortion for a lens that wide. I also have a Nikon 24-120 and a 70-300 to cover the other ranges. I have a Nikon D600 body. I don't use filters as much as I used to, but I do use polarizers for all lenses except for the 14-24 and I use ND filters when I want to capture movement.

Feedback

The advice I would give to others is don't be afraid to break the rules. Rules of composition are there to help you when you are starting out, no doubt. But they are really only meant to be guidelines. Don't be afraid to shoot during the middle of the day. Don't feel that you can't put your subject directly in the middle of the frame. And don't be afraid to shoot the back of the church!
