Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the my friends (the model) friends log home, in the middle of the woods on a small lake. It was taken in a spare bedroom with vintage furniture.

Time

This was taken around mid morning with the sunlight to the right of the window.

Lighting

The lighting was probably 95% natural light from the window. There was a small wall light behind the model. The light from window was just soft enough to highlight her face and belly.

Equipment

Camera was my Nikon D7000, 40mm macro lens, no flash, tripod and a remote shutter release. ISO 200, f/11, shutter speed 1/10.

Inspiration

It was the fact that we were rushed to do her maternity sessions since she was getting so close to her due date. She was talking about the new baby and spoke with such love for her kids, I wanted to bring that thoughtfulness and love to the photo. That sort of longing for her child.

Editing

I don't normally do a lot of post-processing. I used Lightroom and if memory serves me correctly, I masked off the window and lowered the highlights and exposure some. I masked off the rest of the photo and lowered the shadows and exposure.

In my camera bag

Always in my bag are my Nikon D7000, Nikon 35mm & 40mm macro, my Tamron 90mm macro, and my newest lens is my Tokin 11-24mm. I do have a 55-300mm lens but am looking to upgrade that soon.

Feedback

Find a location you love. I fell in love with this whole house and grounds driving up to it. Patience is also key, the light has to be just right for that soft look. And use a tripod & remote so you don't have to use a flash or reflectors.
