The light was in no ways perfect, since it was the afternoon. But we were there at that time, so it was my only chance to take the photo. If I would have gone back I would plan for it to be during sunrise or sunset to boost the orange colors even more!Equipment
This was actually shot using a quite simple setup: the Canon 600D with the 18-55mm kit lens (IS II), handheld.Inspiration
We were on vacation on Maui and were exploring the island. This afternoon in particular, we were driving up to see the Haleakal? volcano. The temperature difference from sea-level was noticable, but despite the chilly weather the views were amazing.Editing
The image was shot in raw and all post-processing was done in Lightroom. The raw version was quite dull and did not capture the colors and texture of the landscape in a pleasing way. I have added quite a lot of clarity and saturation to boost this photo to more resemble the feeling of the volcanic landscape that I had on site. I have also done some local dodging and burning with the adjustment brush.In my camera bag
The 18-55mm lens that I used for this photo is no longer in my bag. I always seem to go for one of my other lenses anyway. At the moment I am carrying: a Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM with a 10-stop ND filter close at hands (for long-exposure landscape and cityscape shots), a Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD (love this lens, it's a real fun focal length), a nifty fifty (Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II), and the newest addition, a Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 (which I am starting to prefer in place of the 50mm, being on an APS-C sensor). I use a Canon 600D body. I usually carry around a Joby Gorillapod SLR-Zoom for spontaneous long-exposures. For the more planned sessions I have a Genesis C5 tripod.Feedback
This was essentially a vacation snapshot using the kit lens. No tripod, no scouting of the area in preparation, no golden hour (as we happened to be there in the afternoon). Nevertheless, this has turned out to be one of my more popular photos. The lesson, I guess, is to take every opportunity to take those shots. It doesn't necessarily matter if you have a pro camera and lens, tripod, and perfect lighting. The best camera is the one you have with you!
