The Uganda Railway was built from 1895 to 1901 by the British Government. It began at Mombasa and extended to Kisumu, the now famous birthplace of the father of President Obama, which was then part of Uganda. It was later extended to Kampala, the capital of Uganda. Among its visitors were Winston Churchill and Theodore Roosevelt.

As a Ugandan student at Lenana School, formerly Duke of York School, Nairobi, Kenya, I was mesmerised by the idea that the train passed through the grounds of my school. The bridge visible in the photograph actually forms an arch for the gate to the school.
