I took this image a few years ago, in 2012, when I was starting to be a bit more serious about photography. I was quite inetrested by wildlife and started to look for opportunity to photograph animals and birds. I went to visit an organization called in french Union québécoise de réhabilitation des oiseaux de proie (UQROP), a Quebec (Canada) provincial network dedicated to the rehabilitation of birds of prey. This is an awesome place to practice your birds portraits and at the same time you give a few dollars to help run this very important organization.Time
I was during the afternoon, and the light was far from being perfect, but the subjects were awesome!Lighting
The birds are in open cages so you work with ambient light, which is good and I went for a backlight image.Equipment
A Canon EOS-1D Mark IV with a Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS, handheldInspiration
I was blown away by the look of those very small but so expressive Tengmalm's owls, especially the male that is so funny! They are like this cute but odd couple and I waited to get a good light and the right expression. Everytime I show this photo I get a laugh :-)Editing
I made a few basic adjustments (contrast, opening the shadows). In my camera bag
When I do a serious photo trip, I will have quite a heavy load. For example, at this summer Tanzania Safari, I had 3 bodies and a range of lenses to be able to photograph wildlife in any condition quickly: one with a 24-105mm, one with a 100-400 mm and one with a 500mm. I also carry a 1.4X and a 2X, so I can have more reach. Like a lot of my fellow photographers I tend to bring too much gear on my trips and when I come back I always decide to bring less the nest time, but of course, I don't! But sometimes, I will go on a trip, for example in a city and bring one body and one prime lens, and see where this takes me.Feedback
In a zoo environment like this, use a long focal. It will help you to eliminate the wire fencing in your image. p.s. I am french speaking... I apologize for my English! Thanks
