Location
This image was captured in the backyard of my property. I live on 4 acres of bush land which is home to quite a few species of animals.Time
I found the little snake late in the afternoon after school one evening and decided I would attempt to photograph it seeing as the temperature was dropping the the reptiles were slowing down.Lighting
There wasn't much ambient lighting at the time due to it being late in the afternoon so I was forced to use flash to keep my shutter speeds high enough to not get motion blur on the snakes head.Equipment
The photo was captured on a Pentax K-3 and 18-55 kit lens with pop up flash and a Benro monopod with a manfrotto monopod one way swivel head.Inspiration
Being an owner of snakes and other reptiles, I know how scared people can be of them, so I thought that if I captured an image at the moment of mid strike it would connect with the readers/viewers through the feeling of fear.Editing
Minimal post processing was done apart from the standard raw tweaks being contrast, saturation and sharpness. In my camera bag
At the moment of this photo I was shooting Pentax but since then I have switched to Nikon for the faster autofocus, super telephoto lenses and upgrade options. In my bag I have a Nikon d7100 and Nikkor 300mm f4, hopefully soon to be d400 and 500mm f4! I also carry around a benro monopod which is great for when your arms get tired with heavier lenses and lastly spare memory cards and battery's.Feedback
Don't go straight infront of the snake and try to capture an image like this as it will likely either bite your knuckles or slither away. Approach nice and slowly and watch how far the snake can lunge before positioning yourself for the shot. I would recommend using an external flash on high speed sync mode to keep your shutter speed high enough the counter the fast movement. Happy shooting!
