Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Foz do Iguaçu, in Brazil. Three countries border on this waterfall, Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. This particular picture is from the Brazilian side of the falls.

Time

It was late morning probably around 11am on a very overcast day. Fortunately it was not raining from above, but the falls saw to it that were drenched anyway.

Lighting

There was no nice blue sky or sunshine on this day, so I tried to avoid getting too much of the sky into the picture and rather focused more on the water itself which added the necessary light.

Equipment

I used my Nikon Coolpix L310 because it's a nice small camera to carry around. I did not have a tripod with me at the time and besides one would get far too wet trying to set up the equipment. Anybody having taken photos at a waterfall this size would know what a challenge it is to keep the camera and lens dry whilst trying to take nice photos. The day we were there it was very crowded and there would not have been space for me to set up a tripod.

Inspiration

The sheer size and beauty of this waterfall is incredible and I wanted to capture the moments in time. Every time I look at these photos I can still hear the thunderous roaring of the water. It's a magical experience to be able to witness the power of nature from so close up.

Editing

No post processing was done on this image.

In my camera bag

Depending on where I am going, I sometimes take 3 different cameras and my tripod. But wherever I go I take at least 1 camera along because there might just be something worthwhile photographing along the way.

Feedback

The trickiest part of taking photos at the waterfalls is to keep the camera dry and the lens free from water spots. So be sure to have a raincoat under which you can hide you camera and a cloth for drying the lens.
