Pure magic. I can so imagine the feeling you must have felt after you captured that one. I remember when I got my first perfect lightning shot. Truly amazing photo this one! Congratulations.

Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken on a South Carolina beach on a hot July night, looking out towards the Atlantic Ocean.
Time
When I visit the beach, you can often find me out at night with my camera. This particular night, a summer storm quickly popped up in the distance. It lasted for almost an hour, and was intense! I had a perfect view to one of nature's most amazing sights.
Lighting
Everyone always says photography is a combination of skill and luck, and I definitely agree. For this image, I was lucky enough to have my camera with me, and the lighting conditions were perfect to capture the lightning. Lightning is very difficult to capture- it has to be the right time of year, right time of day, and the storm needs to be far enough away (but still in view) so as not to damage your equipment. You also need to know proper settings for your camera should the moment arise. This image contains multiple images exposed over 10 seconds at f 2.8, with a high ISO.
Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D600 with a 28mm f 2.8 lens on a tripod. No flash was needed.
Inspiration
I went out on the beach hoping to capture some star trails and work on my astrophotography skills, but the situation quickly changed, and I got something much better!
Editing
Amazingly, all I did was stack the images and edit out airplane trails. Everything else turned out perfectly!
In my camera bag
My camera body is a Nikon D600. I absolutely love it. My favorite lens is a 50mm f 1.8 prime lens. I use it for portraits, and anything that isn't landscape. My landscape lens is my 28mm f 2.8 prime lens. I also have a 70-300mm f4-5.6 telephoto lens, and a 28-70mm f2.8 telephoto lens. And I always bring my tripod!
Feedback
Pay attention to the weather, and be patient. Take your camera everywhere you go. Be prepared for spending late hours out at night- great things take time. If you don't succeed, keep trying. For every time I've been able to to get a shot like this, I've probably had 20 unsuccessful attempts. Never give up, and love what you do!
