I love this shot. I love how no one single zebra stands out from the others, but all are shown distinctly. Nicely done.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the banks of Mara river in Kenya's Maasai Mara National Preserve.

Time

It was just before sunset.

Lighting

Nothing too interesting, The sun had dipped behind the valley walls of the Mara triangle, so the light was at least even without harsh shadows or highlights.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 7D Mark II, with a first generation Canon 100-400 f/ 4.5-5.6L lens. Since the zebras were in shade, I has to set the ISO very high to 1600. Its a miracle that 1/125 of a second was enough to freeze all the action of this herd.

Inspiration

There must have been over a hundred zebra by the bank of the river, they all came down to cross, but until some brave soul decides to go first, none of the others will budge. So the number of them just kept increasing, and increasing, until the only thing on the river bank was zebras. Everywhere I pointed just filled the frame with zebras. So I just snapped off a couple while the masses were tightly gathered.

Editing

Yes, I definitely cropped it, adjusted the contrast, and removed the color. There is a single zebra in the shot that appears as if its looking at the camera, so I tried to frame the shot around its face.

In my camera bag

For wildlife photography, usually a combination of cameras and lenses. I try to keep a large prime or zoom lens on one camera body, and a smaller zoom lens on another camera body. For example: Canon 7D Mark II, paired with a 100-400 or a 400 prime (or larger) Canon 5D Mark IV, paired with a 70-200 or a 24-105.

Feedback

Unfortunately, the only place I know of with the potential for seeing this many zebras at one time (wild or captive) is in East Africa, either Kenya or Tanzania. So I think you'll need to book a safari, and go find some zebras! An important note about timing, this picture was taken at the end of August, when the great migration of wildebeest and zebra is passing north through this region. Any other time of year would not have worked to see this many zebras at one time.
