Behind The Lens

Location

I was out at Whittys lagoon, with some friends enjoying the day and doing some skim boarding. There were a couple herons close by and I decided to get some shots. I crept up along the side of the bird in the water slowly and carefully backing off if it seemed disturbed by me. It took close to 15 minutes to get close enough with the lens I had to get the shots I wanted. I froze in the water up to my knees until it finished fishing.

Time

It was about 10 am and we were just getting to the beach and it was not busy at all and the sun wasn't too high.

Lighting

I really didn't have much control over the lighting but what i did do was approach in a direction where I would not get a back lit situation and at an angle so I wouldn't cast a shadow in the shot.

Equipment

O made this picture with my go to beach camera: Nikon AW1 and the kit lens, and some cold feet.

Inspiration

I have always loved big birds and raptors. I have taken pictures of them since starting out. All of nature is awesome and worth recording and passing on. large birds are particularly interesting because they can fly and go anywhere. The eyesight and hunting ability is amazing and something to watch. I have also been encouraged by nature photographers like Scott Bourne, his photography and his podcasts are big sources of inspiration for me. I had been at the beach all summer watching the herons as I skim boarded and just got it in my head that I had to get a great picture of one of these great birds.

Editing

I wish I could tell you that I did something special you could replicate in post. For this shot I did some basic things in lightroom conentrating on the feather detail on the wing.

In my camera bag

Usually I am out lightpainting. For that I load up with my D7100, with an 18-70 on there and either a 35 or 50 prime. I add an sb700 my eagletac d25a2 a Vanguard Alta tripod a Platypod, and a box of Xmas lights fiber optics plexyglass shapes lasers gels for my flash gels cut for my flash lights. For a day at the beach its only my AW1 with the kit lens and my platypod.

Feedback

My advice to get some photos like this one for yourself is to get out lots where the birds you want to photograph are. I am a regular at that beach and was going last year at least twice a week and was getting to know how the herons around there behaved. Also have patience. Before trying on that day to be quiet patient and get close I would have said the shot was impossible to take without a longer lens.
