Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the Mission Beach Pier in San Diego, California. It had been quite a while since my last trip to the beach and I was ecstatic when I saw the layered sunset.

Time

This was taken in August of 2015 at approximately 7:00 p.m in the midst of the Golden Hour. We arrived a bit later than planned due to the extensive traffic in the area and this was the first place I set up to shoot. There were still a fair amount of people walking the beach and enjoying the sunset.

Lighting

The lighting was perfect for a gorgeous sunset. It was the golden hour with the sun filtering down through the layered clouds.

Equipment

I shot this with an Canon 70D on a Pro-Master travel tripod. I travel a lot, so the smaller tripod is of great benefit. I used a Canon EF 18-55 mm kit lens. I've since upgraded my lenses, but this just goes to show that you can still get great shots with kit lenses.

Inspiration

This shot was a no-brainer. The edge of the pier with the ocean in the distance and the sunset made it an easy decision. I took a lot of photos that evening, but this was, by far, my favorite.

Editing

I bracketed this image at 1 stop when I took it and I used my standard workflow to process it. I typically start by making small adjustments in Lightroom, however, in this case I went straight to Nik HDR Efex to merge all three images. After this, I made adjustments to contrast and color in Nik Color Efex. Finally, I finished up in Lightroom with some small adjustments to overall saturation, vibrance and clarity.

In my camera bag

I'm a landscape photographer, so I typically carry my Pro-Master tripod, Tokina 11-16, Canon "nifty-fifty" 50mm prime, assorted cleaning tools and extra battery. I've also recently started carrying a Platypod Pro for times when I don't want the extra bulk of a tripod.

Feedback

The only advice I can offer is to always be on the lookout and ready to take advantage of great scenery.
