Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a hotspot for photographers on sunsets, at the outskirts of Ponta Delgada where not only the sunsets are glorious but the coastline is very interesting with some volcanic rock formations.

Time

At sunset, which during the summer is rather late, at around 9 pm

Lighting

This photo was taken exposing totally on the sky and placing the people as silhouettes. Normally on sunsets, wihch are beautiful, but usually boring if it there is not something else to complement, I look for strong elements on the first plane. Anyhow sunsets are tricky as the light changes very quickly, so be prepared for the dropping of the light and longer exposure times

Equipment

The equipment I used where a Nikoin D90 equipped with the 70-300 f4.5-5.6 at 180 mm as I had just time to park the car and grab the momnet that could go away at any moment

Inspiration

I saw the beautifll light and was looking for some sort of strong elements for the first plane, and when I saw this scene it was like the cherry on the top of the cake, as I could tell the story of the sine of the phtographers : maklng the others wait

Editing

The post-processing was straightforward, just boosting clarity to give more detail to the people and other elements on the first plane

In my camera bag

What I carry depends on the type of picture I pretend to do, if the intention is doing landscapes I will carry my Nikon D500 with the 17-55 f2.8 mounted on it, the 70-300 f4.5-5.6 VR and an ultrawide angle lens, like my Tokina 12-24 f4. In case. I intend to make some portraits I bring along the 17-55 f2.8 and also the 35 mm 1.8 or 50 mm 1.8 and a flash. The primes I use only if I pretend to have a great bokeh as I favour the versatily of the zooms.

Feedback

The only advise I can give is knowing the right spots , and be aware of the conditions of the light to arrive earlier in order to be able to scout the conditions. Using some sort of software like the Photographers Ephemeris will help you knowing in advance the angle of the light and time that the sunset will occur
