Muir Woods is a lovely bit of serenity that's just minutes away from some of the busiest highways in one of the most densely populated parts of California. The park is every bit as crowded as you might expect, but if you hike as little as a mile or two above the main visitor center, the tourists will have already turned around and headed back to the parking lot, leaving no one out there but the true aficionados, and some of the most beautiful trees on the entire planet.
