This photo was taken at Carrolup, which was a Mission for Australian Indigenous children who were taken from their parents at a young age. The parents were herded onto the back of a truck and taken to a paddock, dropped off there and forced to live only five hundred metres away in a field. They had to build shelters and find their own food and had to write letters to the mission in order to see their children. This could take twelve months and often the requests went unanswered. The parents could hear their children play across the river but were not allowed to see them.
I visited this devastating place recently and this child's shoe was amongst the rubble.
