Behind The Lens
Location
This shot was taken on the main city beach of Exmouth, about 1200km north of Perth in Western Australia. the lights you see far in the background is the town center itself.Time
It was about 8pm and i had promised my friend a few photos of his car. as it was a perfect night even though only a few days before a cyclone had passed over the area so we decided to head down to the beachLighting
i wanted to try and capture both the desert night sky as well as light up the classic Fj40 landcruiser of my friend. the natural lighting was achieved all with the abundant starlight from the desert sky as the moon hadn't risen yet to was out the starlight.Equipment
to achieve this shot i used a $20 tripod from kmart, a cheap remote and a small torch to highlight the car but leave the surrounding nature looking natural. the coloured light s you see spiraling about just behind the car is actually a $2 solar garden lamp from the local hardware store witch i had my friend jump and spin around with while the 3 minute exposure was taken.Inspiration
my friend had just finished restoring the vehicle and was super proud of it, he really wanted something unique and over several beers and looking at some of my other work we decided to go down to the beach and see what we could come up using a long exposure of it using the abundant natural lightEditing
other than a bit of cropping the image is raw off the camera as i don't actually own any post processing softwareIn my camera bag
my normal kit is 4 cheap lenses which are tamron 10-24mm for wide shots, canon f1.8 50mm for portraits a basic 18 -55mm canon kit lens for most things in between and a 70 -200mm tamron kit lens for telephoto work. other accessories i carry are a remote shutter, some spare batteries and a small tripod.Feedback
the best thing i can suggest is just to get out there and experiment! all of my shots have come from hair brained idea that i have decided to do. The great part of digital is that its ok to make mistakes and try again. that being said with long exposure trying to keep the noise down in you images has always been the hard part. keep the iso down as low as your able and it'll be fine, make up for the lack of light sensitivity with aperture and exposure time.
