I work summer and winter seasons in France and Switzerland respectively, and on this particular summer I was working in Saint-Sorlin-d'Arves, in the French Alps. It was a beautiful day and I was on a morning hike up to glacier de l'Etendard.Time
After completing just over half of the hike the day before, I stayed in a mountain refuge that night at refuge de l'Etendard. After a comfortable sleep and a decent breakfast to start the day I set off for the glacier de l'Etendard. This was around 8am.Lighting
There isn't much to add about the lighting. It would of been good to have had a few clouds in the sky to catch their movement on a slow shutter speed but it turned out to be a not-a-cloud-in-the-sky day. Still, with the direct bright sunlight I think the photo came out pretty well.Equipment
This was shot with my first DLSR when I first started out in photography which was a Canon Rebel T5i with a standard 18/55 mm kit lens. Plus a circular polarizing filter.Inspiration
Many photos were taken on this trek from Saint-Sorlin-d'Arves to glacier de l'Etendard but this one is one of my favourites. As I've mentioned, it was a beautiful morning, but also hardly and wind whatsoever. This gave the lake and almost still look which reflected the mountain in the background almost perfectly. I aligned the rock in the foreground to miss the reflected mountain and took the shot.Editing
I had been experimenting with Lightroom over the previous two or three weeks and used it to adjust the whites and blacks and a little contrast. Nothing much at all really and no local adjustments. I was just a beginner. In my camera bag
I don't have too much equipment. As I predominantly shoot landscapes I don't like to carry too much. Especially as I like to eat a lot so my food takes up most of the room in my backpack. Nevertheless, a few things are essential. I have now moved on from the Rebel T5i and kit lens to a Canon 70D and the super sharp Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens. I always carry a tripod and a couple of filters, namely a polarizing filter and a 10 stop filter. that's the lot.Feedback
To be honest anyone could take this shot. A general knowledge of camera settings with the lowest ISO being used was fine for this shot. I was a beginner then, and still am really. there's so much to learn. But what I would say is, yes anyone could take this shot, but...........you have to get out there to get the shot. Don't keep putting off those hikes or early mornings, when the idea pops into your head just get out there and do it. You will always see more out in the field than you imagine before the hike. Nature is amazing, go enjoy.
