Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Altona, NY behind the reception hall that the wedding was at.

Time

This is one of my favorite wedding images. We had a few minutes between the ceremony and the reception, so we wandered off into the woods near the reception hall. It was late afternoon and there was a lot of really nice, shaded areas that made for some beautiful photos.

Lighting

I always try to go as simple as possible with lighting my wedding portraits. Most times, you're on a time crunch going from one event to the next so, when I can, I prefer to stick to natural light or a simple one light setup. The trees overhead provides nice, even shade coverage so no additional lights or reflectors were needed.

Equipment

This was taken on my Nikon D4 with a Sigma 70-200. The 70-200 is pretty much my go to lens these days. It rarely leaves my camera unless I'm doing landscape photography.

Inspiration

I always like more natural photos of my clients. While I will do some basic posing, the best photos are the ones where they're interacting naturally. This was no exception. What you're seeing is a natural moment.

Editing

I try to do minimal post processing when possible. In this case, all I did was make some minor exposure adjustments in Lightroom and applied my favorite B&W preset. I love a good black and white photo!

In my camera bag

It really depends on the shoot, but for weddings, I usually have my D4 and D750, my Sigma 70-200 and 24-70 (usually one on each camera body throughout the day), Nikon 105 macro, Rokinon 14mm, several flashes, my Phottix triggers, a ton of batteries and memory cards, and a few other miscellaneous items.

Feedback

Keep it natural. I setup my clients in very basic poses and then give them some cues to get them to interact. For example, I'll tell one partner to whisper a secret or something funny to the other partner. Usually they'll share a laugh and you'll get some really great shots of them interacting naturally, similar to this photo.
