Behind The Lens

Location

This photo of Lorena was taken in my friend's home studio in Orlando, FL. The model is posed in a doorway with the lights hidden in the hallway behind her.

Time

This is definitely my favorite image of Lorena. It was the last look of our long session, moving into the evening hours. She looks so relaxed and peaceful considering how hard she worked that day!

Lighting

Two lights are set behind her at full power, pointed away from her and bouncing off the wall behind, spilling into the doorway. The trick with this shot is getting her centered in the doorway correctly to spill enough light onto her face.

Equipment

Canon 7d with a 24-105L lens. Two Alien Bee 800's.

Inspiration

As you can see from my portfolio, this image is part of a series I like to do with visiting models. I ask that they bring something all white of their choosing and ask them to pose in the doorway however they want. I love the idea of shooting the same look with multiple models because it gives me the opportunity to fine tune my technique and lighting and also helps me improve my communication skills with models.

Editing

There's very little post-processing in this image, basically white balance and toning adjustments.

In my camera bag

The contents of my bag will vary depending on the current project, but I always have my Canon 7d and a back-up. I love my Canon 24-105L lens. I know there are more expensive lenses out there, but pound for pound, it's by far my favorite go-to lens. I'll almost always have a nifty-fifty lens and usually a longer lens like the 70-200.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to experiment with the placement of lights; even pointing them away from your subject and letting the light bounce. This shot works well because there is a lot of light reflecting into a rather small doorway. This creates bright edges while still casting shadows. It's ok to bounce some fill light if needed. Experiment and have fun.
