Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my studio in Cooperstown, Pa. I have my studio in the basement of my house...it's convenient and a comfortable setting for my models when they come in.

Time

I had invited this young lady to come in to the studio to shoot with me in the evening. Her schedule a little more flexible during the day seeing as how she was home schooling at the time.

Lighting

It was important for me to be able to catch all the drops and drips along with the shine the water was giving to her skin. But I didn't want to loose the texture of her skin either. I wanted the light to be full on her face while placing shadow on parts of her features and her hair.

Equipment

During all of my shoots I shoot with a Nikon D3...I almost never shoot with a tripod. I find it is just too restrictive. I was taught to shoot with as much natural light as possible but in this instance I did use my Alien Bee strobes.

Inspiration

I have always wanted to capture emotion in my photos. At the time of this shoot I was exploring a lot of "broken" and "lost" themes. I felt this style of photo would perfectly match what was being thought up in my head.

Editing

Pretty much the only post production work on this piece was to turn it black and white. I love the monochrome. I think it can really bring out textures that can sometimes be hidden within a color photograph.

In my camera bag

Just my D3 and about 4 lenses! Although I must admit...I generally only shoot with one of the lenses.

Feedback

My advice would be just go with what's in your heart. Art is spoken with feeling and perception. It's your way of telling people your inner most thoughts and feelings without the awkwardness of speaking it out loud. Its vulnerability, creativity, and life through the click of a shutter. Don't be afraid to show everyone what you want to speak but can't.
