Behind The Lens

Location

This is an image of the island at Lake Bled. It's one of the most iconic locations in Slovenia. Viewpoint from where the photograph was taken is Ojstrica hill and is just a short 15-minute hike from the lake's coastline.

Time

It was crystal clear that morning when I checked the weather conditions and it looked like I would have perfect light to take some nice images of Bled. So it was very early in the morning when I made my way towards Bled.

Lighting

As I arrived in the vicinity of Bled the fog was so thick I could barely see anything. I was disappointed at first but soon realized that if Ojstrica is above the fog I could get some spectacular shots. Especially if the fog would slowly lift at the sunrise (which fortunately it did). I made it to the top just before the magic started to happen.

Equipment

I used Nikon D800 with Nikkor 28-300mm lens. It's a handheld shot at about 100mm. I didn't use any other special gear.

Inspiration

A friend told me about this viewpoint which I never visited before (it has become extremely popular in the last 2-3 years). So one morning I just decided to take a few images from there as images of Bled are always great even if the conditions are not extraordinary.

Editing

I did some standard processing by adding some vibrancy, adjusting the curve and colors. I added a bit of extra sharpness because the shot was a bit soft.

In my camera bag

I usually carry two cameras with me, one with 28-300 lens and the other with 14-24 so I can switch faster between wide angle and close up shots. Or I will have one camera mounted on a tripod to shoot time-lapse (most of the times the wide angle lens) and I will run around with the tele-lens and try to capture different compositions.

Feedback

I think the trickiest part is to actually catch great conditions. The location and composition are very straightforward. The best time for fog is usually in autumn time when you also have lovely colors in the foreground.
