Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was made during my winter stay at Plocica Isle (mid Adriatic, Croatia) where I used to dwell in the lighthouse as a sort of "honorary lightkeeper" - mainly taking photos and writing a book. One of my best-spent wintertimes ever...

Time

The Exif says: Date/Time 03-Jan-07 12:39:56 and we have to believe it... ;)

Lighting

The whole of it: Shutter Speed, 1/250 sec, f/5.6, ISO 160, 0.00 eV, Metering Mode: Pattern, Flash Off, Focal Length: 14.3 mm

Equipment

One of my dearest cameras of all, a SONY DSC-R1, a solid and hefty outdoorsy device that has always delivered good shots. I'd still recommend it, although it is rather old nowadays. I used no added gear with this one; the shot was straightforward, out of hand.

Inspiration

My stay on the Lighthouse isle was planned as a secluded slice of time-place needed to work on my book, so I was there alone, feeding myself out of tin cans, and mainly spending the hours on my laptop or one of the two cameras I've had with me. And taking photos was a kind of rest from the keyboard, so I was out and about a lot. The isle is choc-full of themes, and it did not take much inspiration to record any of them. It was a simple part of the ambiental atmosphere; something every photographer would do as a matter of course.

Editing

Mostly all of the Sony R1 photos are nigh SOOC, if you do not count the cropping needed to properly tell the story. As far as I can tell, there was also nothing else done to this one.

In my camera bag

I find it easier to carry a photo vest than any photo bag. So I load my photo vest with whatever I might need for my photo session, walk or trip, while my photo bags usually keep the equipment I'm not using at the moment. The vest's many pockets usually contain two cameras, spare batteries, ND and CPL filters, and one photo clamp standing in for a tripod. Recently I include a small action camera, mainly for its wide field of view and resistance to water and weather. The vest also has large-lens pockets that contain a small water bottle, sandwich, or a bar of chocolate if I plan on being out for the whole day. There is about three meters length of paracord or similar strong, thin rope, one hefty pocket knife, and a lighter. My smartphone comes along too. It has yet another spare camera, but more importantly the Spirit Level App wich I use to make the phone a perfectly horizontal surface under my camera. This is essential for panoramic sweeps. The app is free, and requires no extra permissions whatsoever. The large back pocket of the vest is reserved for a lightweight rain poncho. If the weather suddenly plays up, the poncho neatly covers all. Using the tools mentioned above, much can be improvised along the way, so that's all I need to make photos.

Feedback

Use any camera within its technical abilities and do not count on optimism and good luck to have it make more than it can! Depending upon the circumstances and your wish, that is the most of what you need to apply. Remember those folks that blitz at sporting events from way up in the stadium, and never mind the fact that their flash units can't reach further than five meters distance? Well, that's as naive as it is uninformed... so be familiar with what your gear can and can't do, and apply it to your object of interest! That alone can ensure more satisfactory percentage of "keepers"! Otherwise, be interested in the widest variety of themes... and have a Good Light!
