Calf Roping is the ultimate example in rodeo of teamwork between horse and rider. The horse tracks the calf and adjusts its speed to the running calf. Top horses can do this without instructions from the rider. When the loop is on the calf, the horse begins its sliding stop and the rider steps off and runs down the rope to the calf.
Many riders use a rope to cue the horse to hold tension on the calf. In this image it is seen as the horizontal rope between the saddle and the rider. It is actually a series of loops under the rider’s belt, which play out as the rider runs forward. When the horse sees the rope on the ground, it is the cue to put enough back pressure on the rope to hold the calf in place, but not so much as to drag the calf. Top horses are not cheap and can cost as much as $40,000.
