I know! I almost did not take this shot, even though the sunlight thru the Blue Spruce made wonderful bokeh but then I started focusing in on the back detail and now the backside is my favorite!

gotta go for that backside first--then see what the light does in the other direction. Glad you came over to the other side!🍪😊😇🍪

Location
Early Morning Walk close to my home in Louisville, Co. I have a neighbor who grows Giant and Medium sized Sunflowers in their front yard. Coming back from my open space walk with my dog Stella, I noticed the light was perfect on this Sunflower batch and the best part it was filtered thru a very large Blue Spruce Tree. I decrease my DOF and I was amazed at how blue the bokeh was from the tree filtering the light.Time
I was coming home from a very early walk and it was around 7:00am. Early morning low filtered light.Lighting
Living at about 5500 feet above sea level is great although dry and restricts our bird variety as well as plant variety, but the most difficult photographic problem is the afternoon or late morning light is very harsh. If I go out for a walk in the middle of the day, I rarely pull my camera out of the bag because the light gives undesirable contrast because i is so bright (very little atmosphere to filter it) that the contrast is way over the top! Early morning and late evening light or if you have some a number of puffy or many cirrus clouds!Equipment
This was taken with my Canon EOS 6D and 400/f5.6 L lens. no tripod, no flash,Inspiration
The beauty of the detail in the backside of a Sunflower and the blueish filtered light!Editing
I lightened the shaded area and manipulated the contrast and softened the background which made the "Bokeh" stand out more.In my camera bag

You need to really understand how lenses work as far as controlling your depth of field! I prefer prime lenses in short and long telephotos but not so much with wide angles! Always shoot when the light is low (unless it is cloudy flat light, which has it's own effect) Work on composition and view other peoples work and when you find something you like try to create something similar (not the same) but similar. The more photography you look at the better you will become! It also takes time (somehing I am lacking in due to owning my own business). Never think you can't achieve what you want in life. I started on ViewBug just liking to get Peer Awards and not having a prayer of winning a contest. I now have been a finalist 12 or so times and a runner up and a curator and Photo Challend winner and a Grand Jury award Winner! You never know because it is all subjective! Enter every contest your image will fit into as far as the subject! Remember POP is often important as it grabs the eye! When a judge is looking at hundreds of images the POP will stand out! However, in certain contests you do now want pop but subtlety! Before you enter look at the contest entries / most viewed and see what is getting the attention. There are millions of photographers but only a few thousand are worth looking at a only hundreds keep winning and winning! Commitment!
