Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the Cat Survival Trust which looks after small cats, some from zoos others from private collections. They rehome animals and also have a breeding program where the offspring are released into the wild. Photographic workshops are sometimes held here and although the animals are behind wire it is an opportunity to see and photograph these beautiful creatures.

Time

The workshops are always held during the day.

Lighting

As the workshop is pre-booked we have to cope with whatever conditions are like at the time. On this occasion the weather was dull and cool.

Equipment

This was taken with a Nikon D7100 with a 70-300mm f4.5 lens and hand held.

Inspiration

I love wildlife photography and these workshops give photographers a great opportunity to take pictures of creatures it may not be possible for us to get see in the wild.

Editing

I decided to turn this into a monochrome image as the background did not suit a colour image but was a perfect neutral background for black and white.

In my camera bag

I travel light and try to anticipate what I might need. I use my Nikon D7100 for most of my photography. If I am going on holiday I generally just use a Nikon 18-200mm lens although last year I bought a Sigma 150-600mm lens which I have taken with me as I have been photographing wildlife. I always carry a polarising filter and plenty of lens cleaning cloths.

Feedback

Watch your background, it can make a huge difference to your shot. Get down low so that you are on a level with the animal you are photographing rather than looking down on small animals. Focus on the eyes and try to get the catch light.
