Location
This is an image I have taken on a number of occasions looking across to the Lighthouse at Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast, QueenslandTime
It was just after sunrise and the clouds of a grey night had just started to burn off allowing the sun to make an appearance just above the horizon.Lighting
I always use the Photographers ephemeris to work out roughly where the sun will rise and set at a particular location and I knew it would be very close to the Lighthouse itself. Often the skies are clear and I have shot this image a number of times when the light was just too harsh. The addition of the clouds softened the light allowing the stronger silhouette of the lighthouse against the breaking cloud.Equipment
Taken with a Canon 5D MK II, on a tripod with a 17-40mm F4 Lens at about 24mm - A 6 stop ND filter allowed me to capture the movement in the water.Inspiration
I like to go back time and time again to local places at different times of the year. I had imagined a photo like this a number of times but either the clouds weren't right, or the tide was out and the image lost some of its feel.Editing
Post processed in Lightroom, really just a little exposure correction, some clarity in the sky and a little vibrance to give it some pop.In my camera bag
Canon 5d Mk II, 7D, a 17-40mm F4, 24-105mm F4, 70-200mm F4. Cable release and some ND filters. And a sturdy tripod!Feedback
If you find a place with potential, keep visiting it at different times of the year and try different times of the day and see what works. I love clouds and particularly clearing rain when you get some really dramatic moments. I use the photographers ephemeris to ensure I am in the right place at the right time and also photo pils. There are some great apps available these days to help you take the guess work out of your chances of capturing a great image. But you have to get out of bed and and keep doing it over and over again.
