Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in a small rural town called Big Valley, Alberta, Canada.

Time

If I remember correctly it was about 3:00 PM

Lighting

The image was taken with an infrared camera and that usually requires fairly bright lighting. When I use this camera I usually shoot mid to late afternoon

Equipment

The camera is an old Nikon D70 that was converted to infra red 720 NM. The lens is a standard kit lens 18/55mm

Inspiration

I was walking around the townsite shooting old historical buildings and the train roundhouse was my last stop. The winds in Alberta can do dramatic things to the clouds and this day was no exception. The winds in the upper atmosphere started blowing making wispy clouds. They looked like they formed around what was once the wall of the old roundhouse.

Editing

I use Nik Silver efex to convert the image to B&W

In my camera bag

I use Nikon cameras. The infrared is a D70 and I have a Tokina 11/20 mm F2.8 and a Nikon 18/55 mm. I also have a D80 with a 80/400 mm and a Nikon D5000 and a 55/200 Nikon lens

Feedback

I love clouds, they can be so dramatic. With an infrared camera you can shoot any time of the day and I just look for clouds that will impact the overall mood of the photograph. Old buildings and clouds in B&W are fabulous together. Alberta seems to have a lot of both of those things and I just love getting in the vehicle and exploring back roads. Just get out and explore!
