Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on La Jolla Beach - up to the north from San Diego, California, USA.

Time

I took this photo 5-10 minutes before the sunset in first days of November.

Lighting

I was lucky with the light and with the tide. I do not think it neccesary to think about lighting when shooting the pier. It is more important to realize your idea with pier bearing, with a wave and so on. This time, for example, i spend a lot of time while have found exact position in the middle of pier:)

Equipment

I used Phase One 645df camera and Phase One IQ180 digital back, with Mamiya FishEye 24mm lens.

Inspiration

I've seen a lot of photos made from under the piers. and I wanted to try to do something like that myself, playing with a long shutter. I chose this pier, because he was not far from San Diego, and i was luck with the weather and tide.

Editing

I believe any landscape picture must be post-processed. I used Capture One software and Photoshop, ofcourse.

In my camera bag

In my bag i have one camera Phase One 645df with digital back iq180, three lenses 24mm, 45mm, 80mm for MF, tripod Gitzo with Manfrotto head. Thats all i need.

Feedback

The only thing that slightly hurt - a lot of people on the beach in the evening, and many people want to make the same photo from under the pier. I had to even wait my turn. It does not bother until the sun is high, but when it sits down and it is time to shoot is necessary to act more decisively. I shot when the sun was over the horizon. Strictly in the middle stood a girl with a dog, and she also was taking a picture of the pier. I had to stay in front of her and almost lay down into the water, so as not to obstruct her shot.
