Behind The Lens

Location

This old monastery was found on our drive from Tbilisi to Kutaisi. Our 3 week trip around Georgia took us to some amazing places and we saw some really fantastic places. Ananuri monastery really was a picturesque place, overlooking a bright blue reservoir and sounded by beautiful mountains.

Time

It was a hot summers day about 40 degrees in the middle of the day. I swim in the lovely water below was needed after a walk around the fortified monastery.

Lighting

The strong summer sun behind me lit up the rooftops beautifully.

Equipment

My Nikon Df had a 20mm f/2.8 D a great combination. I used a B+W 10 stop filter and a Haida 6 stop filter to get the long exposure. All mounted on a Manfrotto Befree tripod.

Inspiration

We heard about the monastery while staying in Tbilisi, it was a must see when we left the city. George has lots of fantastic old churches and monestrys, many of them in great condition still. This one with its beautiful back drop was one of my favourites.

Editing

Converted the RAW file to black and white and some contrast and sharpening added.

In my camera bag

When travelling i try and stay as light as possible. My Nikon Df will always be my main companion, partnered with a 20mm f/2.8D a lovely light wide angle prime. Filters and the small Manfrotto Befree tripod complete the light set up. Always carry the essentials a remote, mobile phone, torch, spare batteries and memory cards.

Feedback

Get the right composition, this photo required climbing up the city walls to get a good angle. Use one of the many phone apps to work out the shutter speed when using filters. Make sure you compose and focus the image before adding the filters. Then take the picture ensuring the tripod doesn't move.
