Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken at Crescent Beach in beautiful British Columbia Canada.
Time
The main image of the model was taken just as the sun was almost setting in early August. The wave and bird were taken earlier.
Lighting
I had done a sunset shoot at a model meet and greet not far from this exact spot a few years earlier. I was just starting out shooting with a DSLR, and hadn’t even experimented with flash yet. But the idea took root, and as my experience expanded I was ready to try again. This image was a few years in the making. I had to wait until my technical skills caught up with my imagination! I knew I wanted the model to be backlight with the setting sun and use fill flash to illuminate her face.
Equipment
I used my Nikon D7000 with my 18 – 105 kit lens for the main image of the model. The bird was shot previously with my Nikon D7000 and Sigma 150-500 lens. The wave was taken with my Nikon D7000 and my 18-105 kit lens. I usually hand hold when doing portrait photography. I find it easier to move around the scene allowing me to find the best composition.
Inspiration
As I mentioned the idea for this image took root a few years ago. I had brought a number of different props, one being a disco ball. I was hoping for the sun to hit it and have flares coming off it like the rays of the sun. Didn’t quite work out that way, but I ended up liking how it seemed she was holding the sun in her hand. I find when working with models if they have props it helps them to relax and let a story unfold. Sometimes those images never see the light of day, but they help to create a storytelling atmosphere.
Editing
As soon as I saw this image in post I knew I wanted a bird landing or flying towards the sun she was holding in her hand. I like when an initial image presents a story and then I have to push my technical skills to create what I see in my mind. I hadn’t done a lot of composites up to this image so I had to learn a great deal in Photoshop to make it appear credible. This image is made up of the initial image, the bird and the wave at the bottom. I use Photoshop CC as my base and then use a number of different plug in programs to enhance my workflow. Everything from OnOne, Topaz, and Alienskin.
In my camera bag
What I carry in my bag varies depending on the type of shoot. I have a Nikon D7000, Nikon 18-105, Nikon 105, Nikon 50, Nikon 55-300, Sigma 10-20, Sigma 150-500. Sony A6000. I have two Nikon SB700, Nikon SB600 and the Nikon SB800. I have various ND filters, soft boxes and reflectors.
Feedback
As a photographer I am open to shooting all different genre’s. This shoot required portrait experience including flash experience, bird photography and landscape photography. I never say no to getting out with my camera no matter the subject material. The more familiar you are in all kinds of different environments the more likely you will be able to realize whatever your imagination can dream up. I often try new techniques to push my creative boundaries. I have recently been experimenting with in camera multiple exposures, and with shooting through things. Shoot, shoot, shoot and shoot some more. Finally, invest as much time and learning with your digital darkroom. I would love to get a full frame camera, but first I had to upgrade my computer and all my different software programs so that I could fully realize my finished image. Hope this helps inspire you to get out and let your imagination soar!
