Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was takin on a lonely, single lane road in a small farming town called Bushy Park. The reflection is a true image coming off the amazingly still waters of a large dam just off the road side.

Time

This shot was taken just as the first bit of sunlight was coming over the horizon. I waited as the sun came up further but the clouds seperated and the light became harsh making the shot lose its softness and seem much less apealing.

Lighting

I didnt have any extra lighting to use but didnt deem it needed anyway. It was always going to be a silhouette shot so the background light was all that mattered.

Equipment

The picture was taken on a canon 700d with a tamron 16-300mm lens. I didnt have a tripod at the time so had the camera resting on an old fence post with the strap wedged in underneath to keep it steady and level.

Inspiration

I'm fortunate that i get to spend my time working in country farming towns spread around Victoria, Australia. Even though most trips are made down the same roads to the same general areas, i always try to see something different on each trip. The morning of this shot i had a fair idea of the area and the weather may be quite good for a decent capture, but was astounded with how calm the water was when i got there.

Editing

The photo is as true to natural as it could be. No photoshop, no lightroom. Only minor adjustments made with the basic tool set that came with the camera. I have been asked more than once about if i used a mirror or did an image flip, but its not the case. It was just really fantastic day and great timing.

In my camera bag

At the time my gear was very minimal. Only a cleaning kit and a cheap circular polarizer which has now, as it does, turned into hoard of filters for any occasion and now, a tripod. Always the tripod.

Feedback

Capturing a picture of this type, like with most, is all about timing with the weather being extremely crucial. Finding anytime of day when it is this still is amazing. Its one of the many things about photography that keeps us chasing the next shot.
