Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in my back garden when my son was helping to build a new patio roof for me . I wanted to record the building process and progress so I was shooting a series of images.

Time

This image was taken on a bright sunny day .. I was drawn to the sparks from the cutting tool and the light on my sons hands

Lighting

The bright daylight was a hindrance as I wanted to emphasize the sparks and keep the light on my son's hands. I used a small aperture f 22 and an ISO 100 to reduce the light .. I also used a faster shutter speed at 1/200 secs to capture the individual sparks

Equipment

The shot was taken hand held with a Canon 1100 D with a 55-250 mm zoom lens attached . The image was taken at 145 mm zoom. A Circular Polarizing Filter helped to control glare .

Inspiration

I wished to record the building process and my son has lovely hands .. the combination of the cutting tool , a workman's hands and a rough work shirt appealed to me .

Editing

The image was shot in RAW and processed with Canon's Digital Photo Processing (DPP) soft ware . I increased the contrast and saturation then reduced the brightness . A small amount of sharpening and cropping was done .

In my camera bag

I pack a Canon 1100 D with an 18-55 mm for landscape work .. a 55-250 zoom for getting in closer to wild life and any other image I need to close in on. I am on limited funds so I have added a Canon 500D close up screw on lens to my gear .. I use it on my 250 mm lens for macro work. I also include a range of ND filters, a Circular Polarizing filter, UV filters for protecting my lenses, a Tripod and mono pod and cleaning equipment . I also have rain gear for my camera to shoot in adverse conditions

Feedback

Safety is paramount in this situation where building equipment is being used. Hence the need to use a zoom lens. Being aware of the light and taking control by shooting in RAW with Manual settings also aids in achieving the image you want.
