This photo was taken while visiting a reptile exhibit at the state fair. I was very new to photography, most of the pictures I took were at eye level or from the same perspective of my young son. He was my muse, seeing the world from his perspective gave me a whole new appreciation and understanding of the joy found in simplicity. This was the beginning of what became my love of photography.Time
Mid afternoonLighting
The only light was that of the sun peaking in through the door or entrance to the exhibit. My son was determined to stay with the snapping turtles until one eventually moved thus proving it was real. We waited, and waited, and waited and as I grew impatient I turned around and watched the sun rays move just enough to splash some light on this guy lurking behind me. Just a very lucky moment.Equipment
My very first digital camera, a Canon Powershot Si 5Inspiration
I was simply at the right position at the right moment watching the world from my son's point of view. He was four at time (now 14), his awe and excitement for bugs, reptiles, critters in general, the natural world surrounding us was most definitely a source of inspiration. He is still my inspiration in so many ways.Editing
I did do some post processing to this photo. At the time I used Gimp as it was FREE and was similar enough to Photo Shop. I do not recall what exactly was done in the post processing stage. The BW conversion was post process and I probably used the de-saturate tool, made some curve adjustments, brightness & contrast adjustments and a bit of dodge & burn. I really did not know what I was doing at the time, It mostly trial and error until it looked similar to what I saw or envisioned. In my camera bag
Two years ago I finally upgraded from that little point and shoot camera. These days I carry my beloved Nikon D7100, My favorite lens a Sigma18-35 1.8 DC Art lens, a Nikon 50mm 1.4, a Nikon 24-70mm 2.8 and a tripod that was a garage sale find held together with left over Ikea pieces and duct tape. It works.Feedback
For reflections such as this one, calm still water is a must. Try positioning yourself just slightly above the eye level of your subject and bring the focus through the reflection to the subjects eyes (or eye). Find the balance between the real and surreal.
