Sometimes you can plan when to hit a spot, the tides, the sunset time, the phases of the moon. But there is a lot that is just plain luck. This is my one visit to the Crack in Davenport, California. I lucked out with the perfect tide and a nice sunset that didn't steal away from the amazing foreground.

Location
Davenport, California. A small coastal town 10 miles north of Santa Cruz, California.Time
SunsetLighting
With the dark rocks in the foreground and the bright sun in the back, I decided to use a graduated filter to calm down the sun exposure (just to the horizon line).Equipment
Canon 1D-X with 16-32 lens and a "big stopper" filter with additional graduated filter. Also a sturdy tripod.Inspiration
I saw this spot photographed by other photographers and want to add my own take on the location.Editing
Very minimal photoshop. In my camera bag
Always have the dark filters and sturdy tripod for my landscape pics because it gives a great look to the water in the picture.Feedback
Use manual mode and always wear sturdy shoes and be very careful when photographing on rocks near the sea. this is a very dangerous area and one should keep an eye on the rising tide and wave action.
